Hot summer day in 1935 on the south of England, thirteen year old Briony Tallis has a strong talent for writing and a desire to become a writer. Her imagination initially writes carefree children things that slowly grow into a seriously questions about life, solitude and the world. On the estate of family Tallis is great assembly and Briony finishes writing the text for the play that will derive with her relatives during dinner. At one moment will see that her older sister Cecilia flirts with Robbie, the son of family maid and make wrong decision. That same evening, she pronounced a deliberate lie about Robbie that will have tragic consequences for her family and that will haunt her all life.

Atonement is interesting story about a girl, her family and a single mistake that will completely change the course of family history. The writer very subtly evokes the characters, their character and destiny.

McEwan tells a brilliant story about a poignant mistake that one girl did and thus destroyed several lives. When you fall in love with heroes and forgive their mistakes because you understand their motives, you will expect to be happy end but sometimes there is no redemption. Damage done by mixing in other people’s lives cannot be repaired, there is no catharsis and only thing that remains is Atonement.

Based on the novel Atonement was filmed a same name film directed by Joe Wright.
